Weird output of quotes.

Here is some source code:

<a href = "hello.htm">hello!</a>

But, for some unknown, really, REALLY annoying reason, my server keeps outputting this to browsers:

<a href =" hello.htm">hello!</a>

Which fails the XHTML validation test, and annoys me.

Could someone tell me if they know a way to get around this, or even why on earth it is doing this ?!

what does this have to do with PHP? are you using PHP to dynmaically generate that HTML? if so post that code.

Nothing specific with php I guess, its just I figured your all interweb knowitalls. 🙂

edit: Didnt see the 'Linux/Unix Help' forum, guess that would be more appropreiate. We're running apache on linux.

dont even think about it :-P its a html problem if any.

a link should look more like;

no spaces!!!

I know thats what it should look like!

But my source is getting mangled somewhere. Something is moving that character, I really cant determine what the hell would make that happen...

I need to get it fixed, my pages are falling through validation based on that one error! ( constantly reoccouring with every hyperlink on my server...)

Nope. It is just plain old html. No PHP in there at all.

then it would seem like more a bug in your browser. or maybe your editor is adding something.

html is just served up as is by most web servers.

Edit: This seems to be a bug in firefox !

Could someone please confirm my findings, in msie, the code should be a space, then quote, in firefox, it appears as a quote, then incorrectly suffixed via a space.

Incidentally, I note that this happens for most - though not all - attributes in http://www.technowax.net/ itself.

But that's okay; it's still XHTML1.0 Strict compliant (C.7 and 4.7 notwithstanding) and only occurs when you use Firefox's source view. So it's a display bug in Firefox's source code viewer that doesn't reflect the internals (saving the page and looking at the result in a text editor verifies this). Why it happens for your site I dunno. But if you save the page (from Firefox) and reopen the page locally (in Firefox) you'll see that it's all happy again.

Maybe a trip to bugzilla.mozilla.org is in order.

Looks like quite the common bug, although I reported it again before seeing this.

Still hasnt been fixed in 1.0.3, though. 😐

As noted in bug 276253 (the one I linked to), the fix for this is scheduled for Firefox 1.1. No point disrupting the development process for such a minor cosmetic issue. It's only a display bug in the view source renderer, after all.

And it's still XHTML 1 compliant anyway.
