Determine whether a file is a web page or not?

How can I understand if a URL returns a web page or not (the URLs are on other servers and can be accessed through the web)...

Checking the extension is not a good idea...

I thought mime-types can help, but I don't know any mime-type-functions in php...

One of the headers returned from a webpage will look like

Content-Type: text/html
 - or -
Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1

How to get the headers depends on how you're requesting the page of course. CURL has a special option to set. fsockopen will return them to you whether you like it or not. Not sure what fopen does honestly.
