Php variant of Leftstr

I'm looking for a php variant of Leftstr or some code that would do the same.

I'm making an index page that show snippets of text found on my website. So for example for my Article section I want to show a random article and show the first 150 characters of the text.

Apparently Leftstr($text,150) is not something that works 🙁

You want substr.

Oh, and you would do well to become good friends with the manual in general.

I was looking there and used google aswell but there where so many function in the php list that it was near impossible to guess one. closest I got to what I needed was wordwrap and str_split.

But thx for the help though.
