imagecreate gives a lot of crazy signs and error messages

If I use imagecreate on my php-page that outputs html, I get a lot of crazy signs, and then error messages from imageline, imagepng, imagedestroy.
I suppose no image is created with my imagecreate, but why not?
Is the fact that the php-page outputs html causing these errors?

imagecreate does just that, it creates an image. You can't simply "spit out" binary data from an image into an HTML file. Look at the example in the manual for imagecreate()
