I'm Stuck - MySQL upgrade mucking it up.

I did an upgrade to MySQL 4.1

Apparently the password hashing has changed and now my MySQL-Front versn 2.5 wont let me connect to the database.

I am not married to MySQL-Front but do like some kind of interface. I tried downloading PHPmyAdmin and I had the same problem. I get an error message:
1251 - Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

And here I thought I had upgraded my MySQL Client! Silly me!

Can anyone help me get this thing kick started.

I tried putting "old_passwords" in the my.ini file and I tried storing that in my Windows file. But I am still not connecting.

Not sure where to start for trouble shooting this.

It may be a mySQL front thing. Have you tried upgrading to ver 3.2 (the latest)?

Well, no I didn't try the newer version as now they charge some actual money for it.

But I did try the PHPmyAdmin interface and had the same problemos.

I did load MySQLAdmin and can get it to run with the MySQL. With it I can connect and see the tables and shemas, but for some reason if I right click the tables in a database that has lots of data it wont let me edit the data, the option is grayed out.

Close, but not quite there.

Here are some googled answers:

1) Navigate to the directory you installed MySQL to (most likely C:/Program Files/MySQL/MySQL Server 4.1/), then open the bin directory and open mysql.exe – you will be prompted to enter your root password.
2) After logging into the MySQL command prompt successfully, type this command:
SET PASSWORD FOR ‘root’@’localhost’ = OLD_PASSWORD(‘YOUR ROOT PASSWORD HERE’);
3) Press <enter> to execute the command, then type quit and press <enter> one more time. The MySQL command prompt should close.

You have mysql 4.1.8, but your php was built with the library for an earlier
version, which, as the error message says, doesn't support the new, more
secure authentication protocol. Your choices are to tell mysql to use the
older, less-secure protocol, or build a copy of php using your current mysql

I have set my password using the OLD_PASSWORD() method with MySQL, and now I can successfully login, but isn't there another way to fix this? It is only on the PHP side; it must have something to do with the MySQL library I am using. Is there a way to upgrade this? I compiled php with the --with-mysql option.
