File Retrieval

I have amassed many files in various formats over the years, that I would now like to share with my peers, allowing them to upload their files as well to the collection.

The archive needs an organizational system of category, sub categories, file type, etc.

Does anyone know of a free code/script for this type of project?

I don't know about how many files we are talking and what their size is. But yuo could think of setting up a table with BLOBs and store all your files in there and tag them in whatever way you want (keywords, category etc). When you have done so, it becomes really easy to sort them in any way your peers want them to sort. No hassle with directories or whatsoever.

The ammount of files are in the thousands and I expect that with time it will grow to tens of thousands.

As for size, they are anywhere from .txt files of a few bytes to .mp3 or .avi files of many mb's.

Due to the large number of files I would prefer a category method, for my own peace of mind, I like order.

Ok. It is of course totally up to you, but I would prefer by working with BLOBs. Much easier and safer to guard and monitor etc. as well.

Anyway, for another reason I had to move to directory structure as well. The structure I use was told to me and you can read about it at: http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10299614

Now having the structure, it is easy to store the adittional information in the dbase (filename, keywords, category, filetype, whatever you want!).

Thanks again for the info. I will not be doing the actual programming so I will have to discuss this with the programmer.

So that I could understand a bit more of this works would you be able to give me a link that explains BLOB's?

I am assuming that all of this relates to the backend and that it would not hinder any php or html coding in regard to the frontend, how the user will see the results. Is that correct?
