Mail() only works from same domain?

I'm trying to use the mail() feature and for some reason it only works if the to and from fields email addreses are in the same domain... is that how it's supposed to work?
If so, is there a way to bypass that? I read somewhere about a pear mailing client, how does that work?

I have limited knowledge about emailing through php so I would appreciate your help.

How about posting the code for it?

I believe I've had a similar problem in the past and the host had a lockdown on things to prevent spam.

actually all of my scripts dont work.. here's one:
($payer_email is inputed from form)

$text = "Confirmation\n\n";
$subject = "Confirmation";
$from = "[e-mail]";
$to = $payer_email;

mail("$to", "$subject", "$text", "From: $from\nX-Mailer: PHP", "-f $from");
