Problem with rating system...

Ok, I've created a basic rating system.. and it stores the current rating and number of votes in the database.

My problem is that ... an item which has 1 vote and a rating of 5 is being placed over an item which has 500 votes and a rating of 4.9

.. how can I stop this?

It depends how you designed it. Can we see the breakdown of the queries that drive it?

A first thought though, is that you somehow ORDER your output based upon total number of votes and then percentage. Seems plausible.
