Inserting html pages using php

I could just be stupid but have spent all day trying something that seems so simple and have copy pasted tutorials but still no result!

Basically i want to include a "header page" at the top of every page on the site.
Have tried examples using echo, include, require and several others with no joy.
If anyone has a simple script which does this or a similar task it would be appreciated.
Using php 4.3.11 if that makes any difference.

The one thing that is confusing me is that when i view source the php code is being displayed, dont know whether this indicates a problem with the code or that the server simply isnt processing it.

Make sure the page has .php extension.

Then at the top of the page put the following:

<?php include("path/to/htmldocument.html"); ?>

If that doesn't work, post your code and I'll have a look at it.

ok cheers, confirmed my stupidity.
had correct scripts but saved in my original .html file, simple change to .php and it works!

doh!
