PHP seems invisible???

Hey,

I have a problem with my PHP and I am fairly noob with it so bear this in mind when you help, but any and all comments are appreciated. Let me fill you in on my spec and then my problem.

On my server I run:

Mandrake 10.1 Community
Apache 2 (with PHP support)
MySql server
proFTPd

These are the main packages that I run.

Problem

I have tested out pure PHP files on my webserver and they appear to work fine. However, recently I launched my site and I am tweaking the final bugs that are present. The php files that I tested I have cut and pasted the code into the relevant sections of my page.

I have a problem that although they work fine as standalone pieces of code they dont work on my website. For some wierd reason it appears as though all of the PHP on my website apart from that on my survey page does not work.

I am really puzzeld as to why and would appreciate any help given

Ever tried looking at the source of your page?

It's outputting the PHP. Wanna know why?

The requested URL /index.php was not found on this server.

You don't have an index.php. How do you expect the PHP interpreter to process this file when it doesn't know it should contain PHP? The PHP interpreter does not examine every outgoing file from the server for PHP code; only files with the proper extension.

Whats an index.php You need to excuse the fact I am a total noob. Where do I get one? Is my php not correctly installed on my server???

Did you not read my post?? I told you; PHP only executes files with the proper extension, namely .PHP. The index.html file on your server is NOT being interpreted by PHP because... well I'll leave you to figure that one out.

If you don't even know about the .php extension, and are asking "where to get one," then you should probably not even be using PHP, or at least should be using tutorials/guides that start at the very basics (such as using .php extensions on PHP files).

I think I know what your saying
For the page to have the PHP interpreted it needs to be php, not HTML, which is all well and good but then how will apache pick it up when people type in my URL???

read your httpd.conf file. its all in there, commented so its easier to understand. somewhere in that file there is a section that allows you to set default pages.

should look something like this;

<IfModule mod_dir.c>
      DirectoryIndex index.php index.phps
</IfModule>

so.... if you wanted the default page to be foo.php you would change your httpd.conf file to;

<IfModule mod_dir.c>
      DirectoryIndex foo.php
</IfModule>

Right, thats kool, does that mean doing a PHP include would have the same effect if my PHP was in a separate .php file???

Hey, i took your advice and changed the index file to a php file and it worked a treat, except for my hit counter code is a little screwy, I'll work it out
