php fopen parsing microsoft word document??

Hello everyone,
I am new to PHPBuilder and this is my first post. I am also new to php and need all the help I can get. It is possible to parse microsoft word document with php fopen() and search for certain symbol or word in the document? Any help, sample codes, references would be great. Thank you in advance.

Word documents are encoded in a particular format. There are sites that help but I am yet to see a solution to read a Word Document within PHP.

Ive done a search which should help find possible solutions however not in the way you want.
