preg_replace

I'm having some tough times learning regular expressions.... so I guess I'll just ask:

I have one preg_replace set up to strip anything but alphanumeric symbols:
preg_replace("/[^\w\d]/", "",$fname).'"';

1. I would like another to strip anything but alphanumeric, periods, underscores and @ symbols (passing email address).

2. I would like another for alphanumeric AND spaces.

If you could supply them, I think it'll start 'ringing a bell' on teaching me these.

I think the regular-expressions.info site has a good tutorial.

And in my extensive use of regular expressions I have developed a windows program to aid in the process of creating them. You simply paste in the sample search text, and then start typing the regex, and as you go it highlights any matching text, as well as breaks down all the matches and submatches in a tree-view on the right. www.neoprogrammers.com is where you can download.

Drew, I like that Visual RegExps! I'm on a linux box right now, but I'm going to check that out on a Windows machine tonight. Looks pretty useful.

oh and its written in .net so if you get mono you should be able to run it on *nix
