Object Oriented Approach

Hi all,

I've been lately designing a complex application which will be implemented in several languages(for OS based GUI and web-based) and I've been considering PHP for the web-based frontend. 1 year ago and had somewhat unpleasant experience with OO approach with PHP - I had object which in turn had objects as their members and so on. When I tried to test some of the code, I got into a trap. PHP started allocating memory like crazy just for the init part of the script and it went to something like ~200mb and then it just exited saying that it timed-out. I just want to ask is the situation any better now with PHP5? Or I should just forget about php and go for python or something else for my web-based frontend. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Just because your code ate up 200 mb of memory does not mean that PHPs memory management is bad, it means that your code is bad 😉.

PHP 5 has a much stronger object syntax than PHP 4 and is very akin to Java, however PHP 4 is usually capable of most things.

I don't think that having 2 objects, which themselves have ~40 another objects as members have to result in ~200mb and a timeout, having in mind that the objects are empty, they were just initialised. I will play with PHP5 and some objects and see what comes out.

I agree with Shrike, you did something wrong. I used OOP for PHP4 and am using it for PHP5 and it works great. OOP for PHP4 is very minimal, but it has the important key features. If you use PHP5 then OO features is much richer and more of what you expect when doing OOP.
