[Resolved] get data from table

i have a problem. here..take a look below:

i want to get data from field (No) where field Topic=' Susan's Article '.
how can i do this without getting error?

Can you post the error you're getting? Perhaps some of the code would be helpful.

Try this:

$get_no = "SELECT 'No' FROM $table WHERE Topic='Susan's Article'";

$topic =mysql_query($get_no);

You can then echo $topic.

Part of the problem you may be having may have to do with the apostrophe in "Susan's Article" - you may want to eliminate that.

Reflash, correct me if I'm wrong (I'm only just learning PHP now).
But can't one just escape it with backslash ('\'), so it would be like this: Topic=' Susan\'s Article ' , or should one simply double-up the single quotes, as such Topic=' Susan''s Article '
NOTE: those are two single quotes, not one double-quote.

You may be right, cconn, but being quite the noob at php myself, I haven't quite figured that one out yet. I think that you can use the addslashes() and stripslashes() functions (see http://us3.php.net/manual/en/function.addslashes.php) to do it automatically for you.

If you're going to do it yourself, it should look like this:

Topic=' Susan\'s Article '

Did you try the code I posted before? Also, if you post the code you have now, I would have a better idea of where the problem lies.

I didn't try the code you posted earlier.
I don't have PHP installed here at work.
I was merely responding to your post, because I believe the ANSI SQL standard is simply to double-up the quote (whatever type), before storing into the database.
I believe in the posts that were at the bottom of the link you provided referred to the fact that slashes are not necessarily the standard for DBs, but some do include the ability to use the reverse slash to escape the next value.

Yeah, I don't have PHP installed here at work either (or at home, for that matter!). However, my hosting service has it installed on their servers along with MySQL by default. So any code I write, I just upload it to a folder on my website & run it from there. Not very elegant, but it works...

You're right about the user comments & the ANSI SQL standards. I wasn't aware as I didn't pay any attention to that part - I use MySQL, and I tend to block out anything that doesn't directly pertain to that.

Let me know how it works out for you.

thank you for the output. But the real problem is because the value='Susan's Article' is already in the table. I am not allowed
to change the value. I can only read it.

Below is example of part of the coding I used:

$Topic[$i] = "Susan's Article";
$query = "select count(*) from 'Tablename' where          Topic='$Topic[$i]' ";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$number = mysql_result($result, 0);

Actually no error is displayed. It just doesn't produce any result.

Any suggestions? Anyway, thanx again for all the help.

Debug the query;

$query = "select count(*) from 'Tablename' where          Topic='$Topic[$i]' "; 
$result = mysql_query($query);

changes to:

$query = "select count(*) from 'Tablename' where          Topic='$Topic[$i]' "; 
echo 'Query is: <hr>' . $query . '</hr><br>';
$result = mysql_query($query) or die('Error, MySQL said: ' . mysql_error());

Also, you need to escape the data in $Topic, so use this query instead, as it's safer:

$query = "select count(*) from 'Tablename' where          Topic='" . mysql_real_escape_string($Topic[$i]) . "' ";
