I just registered on the Forum and thought I'd say Hello. I picked this forum as there wasn't a lounge for chit-chat and I will probably be spending a bit of time in this one 😉

I am going to be updating an existing intranet site for my company and if anyone has some good resources or sites they like please let me know. I am currently going through parts of the manual at php.net so that should keep me busy for awhile. :p

In the near future I would like to add a small forum on our site (search capabilities is a must have). Any good (free) ones out there?

I would also like to say hello as a newbie. I am totally new to PHP and am on the verge of eventually learning how to implement AMP.

But I wanted to know what the experienced developers thought would be a good suggestion to start off with. I would assume PHP 5 would be best, or suggest anything else.

I was reading through some different topics. Does anyone recomend using anyhting like Dreamweaver or any other software to help get me started?

I’m not an expert, but from what I’ve read in the last day or so..
Dream weaver is sorta ok if you want to use it to make a template or something, but it is harder to see what the php code is doing.

(assuming you are on windows)
I found a program called PHP Expert Editor and have liked it so far, it colors the code and does some indenting etc. plus its free! The main perk is you can hit run in the editor and it will pull up the webpage - you dont need to have a browser open as well. I only have 2 gripes with it and they are minor.. the auto indenting is a little touchy, and you if you hold down the right arrow key it will just keep going instead of looping to the next line.

I assume you are using apache as a web server or have hosting somewhere? I dont know what AMP is, but if you want a DB as well there are many free ones out there with mySQL as a well known example.

Thanks Bob_man. I will have to check it out. I am planning to use Apache is my web server. As I have read. AMP stands for Apache, MySQL, and PHP. I do plan on applying a DB as soon as I can get a handle on PHP.

For PHP (and for all these programs in general) you want the latest version which is 5. something.

I know there is a program out there called php triad (or something like that) which is a single install of all three of those programs, but tends to be a little out of date for versions. While there are the occasional install horror story out there, 2 days ago I installed apache (www.apache.org) which took about 10 minutes after downloading (5 megs). PHP (2.2 megs from php.net) took about 10 as well, plus there was like 3 things in the php.ini file that need to be updated. Pretty easy all in all.

I cant tell you much about mySql as I don't us it right now, sorry.

As to your question about what the different versions of PHP are - honestly I dont know the specifics. For the most part the newest version will have better security, error handling etc. Its not necessary to download the newest version every time one comes out, but if your starting fresh you may as well.
