$_REQUEST array not showing up

I have a uri that looks like this:

http://site.com/index.php?var1=value&var2=anothervalue

... and the $REQUEST array is empty. The variables are showing up in $SERVER['argv'] but I don't want to access them from there. I do a print_r($_REQUEST) on the first line of the index.php file and still nothing shows up. I have no idea why this started up all of the sudden. Any ideas?

use $_GET

echo $_REQUEST["var1"];
