Sorting query results based on two columns

I am new to php and mysql, I built a classified ad database for a car club and there are two types of ads:

Picture Ads
Text Only Ads

All ads are stored in one table at the moment, adstable. I want to display the picture ads first and then the text only ads. I further want to display both types of ads sorted in descending date order. The relevant field names are pic1 for the picture and approved for the date.

Can I do this with one select query, I can't figure out a syntax that works? The pic1 field contains NULL if the ad does not have a picture. Thanks for any assistance.

have a db colomn like this:
is_image = 'y'

and use this kind of sql statement:

SELECT * FROM tabel ORDER BY is_image, date DESC

No need to add a column, you can just do something like:

select *, coalesce(img,'0000') as orderby from pictest order by orderby;
