PHP or ASP, or .NET?

Hello, I am considering a project right now and what to build it in.

Its really quite a simple content management system, with certain content you have to pay for.

so... CMS + Shopping cart function.

Are there benefits to going the PHP route over ASP and MSSQL?
Whats the license cost of MSSQL now?

Can MySQL handle shopping cart data well now? I know there was an issue about it for a while.

well, your asking these questions on a php board so opinions may be a little biased, but, php of course!

asp isn't half the language that php is. it has no mail / file upload / image manipulation capabilities (thats just for starters) and im afraid vbscript was never intended for the web.

.NET is another ball game, but from what ive seen its too bloated for the web.

ah, thanks! I thought there were once some issues about the database locking and unlocking that gave problems to doing transactions with php and MYsql, but I have forgotten the details.

So, its good for transactions?

Also, what is a good way to find php coders for freelance projects?

If you ask on a ASP/.NET forum, members there will recommend ASP/.NET. There is nothing PHP can do and ASP/.NET can't. So be specific. Say if $ is your concern, then you should probably go for the LAMP solution.

LAMP is free - and is extremely powerful.

MySql - doesn't support transactions in the stable releases - MySQL 5 does but still only dev releases. MySQL is fast and powerful but if you need transactions - then you can opt for Postgres another Open Source Database - which is extremely robust and feature rich.

Scripting Language wise - its up to you, you can accomplish what you want in either language. PHP is fast, easy to pick up (which has a downside - its too easy to write pap code). But you should be able to create a good OO code base for a CMS with relative ease in PHP (as long as you think it through) - which will leave your CMS easily extendable in the future and give you maximum code reusage in the future.
