mod rewrite stuff

I am a noob in mod rewriting.
I can only do real simple one.

Can anyone advise me how can i implement a mod rewrite rule on the following.

When visitor type
www.domain.com/profile/11
--->
www.domain.com/profile.php?id=11

And when visitor type
www.domain.com/profile/11/2
--->
www.domain.com/profile.php?id=11&page=2

I know the following works for the 1st case.
RewriteRule ^profile/(.*) profile.php?id=$1 [L]

But it might go into loop when type in
www.domain.com/profile/11/2

i'm not good in mod_rewrite but you might want to try this:

assuming profile id is numeric, based from ur example, also you want to limit the length of the profile id, let's say 4-6 digits only, and page number to 1-3

RewriteRule ^{profile/([0-9]{4,6})/([0-9]{1,3})/?$} profile.php?id=$1&page=$2 [L]
RewriteRule ^{profile/([0-9]{4,6})/?$} profile.php?id=$1 [L]

i'm not sure how to combine these two conditions to just 1 line
