Subtracting a week from the date

Is there an easy way to subtract one week from the current date without having to do lots of checking to see how many days in the month etc.

• <?php
  $toyear = date("Y");
  $tomonth = date("m");
  $today = date("d");
  ?>

I have this for the values of the current day - I would like to work out the same for a date 7 days earlier eg $fromyear $frommonth,$fromday

Using strtotime() makes it easy. For example:

echo date('y-m-d', strtotime('-1 week'));
