Alphabetically sorting/splitting

Been scratching my head for a while now during numerous searches through the forums for a solution to my issue, but so far to no avail... perhaps I am using the wrong search terms, but who knows?

I am pulling data from mysql and sorting it on a field, then placing it in a table.. all well and good.. BUT!

Is there a (fairly simple) way to split these results up a little ?

currently, I am returning all the a's, then the b's, then the c's etc. Each result contains 4 variables which are dropped into the table row as expected, nicely sorted ascending.

I am basically looking to return all the results for A into my table, then place a blank row, then return all the B results, then a blank row, then the C, blank row, etc...

I hope this question is clear and concise enough, and that one of the wizards here can shed a little light for me?

Well.. You could take the first letter of the variable as it comes from your results array, and compare it to the lasts first letter. If it is the same, do nothing. else leave an empty line:

$oldfirst = "a";
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result))
  {
   $firstletter = substr($row[SOMECOLUM],0,1);
  if(! $firstletter == $oldfirst)
     {
      //output empty line
      $oldfirst = $firstletter;
      }
     // some other output
  }
