php code giving two different results on two different servers...

So here's my situation...over the course of the last few months I've done a good amount of php coding for some courses at uni, and it's been running on their server. I want to run those php pages locally now(becaues the quarter is over and they will delete what I have on their server). I've recently installed php on my own machine, running with Apache 2. I've inserted the correct lines in the Apache config file to load up the php module. The php pages themselves display, but I get error messages I NEVER got when it was running on the school's server...

Undefined index: PATH_TRANSLATED

Isn't PATH_TRANSLATED a built-in index in php? Why am I getting errors I never got before on the other server?

I'm just taking a guess, but run phpinfo() byitself and look for PATH_TRANSLATED. In the version I have, its found in the $SERVER array. You might need to check your code and see how you're referrencing it. Something like: $SERVER['PATH_TRANSLATED'] should do it.

See, that's another thing...phpinfo won't work. When I try to load the page, it just sort of stays hung on the page I'm currently at instead of going to the phpinfo page. And sometimes instead of that it acts like it's been redirected to a page it can't locate. It's weird. I don't understand it.

Just for giggles, it sounds like you've done this right, but just to double check, your phpinfo file looked like this?

?>

If not, give that a shot. If so, and its not working, then I'm thinking you have a PHP config problem.

This is weird...I got phpinfo to work, and what I found in it was, instead of PATH_TRANSLATED, it has ORIG_PATH_TRANSLATED...when I put that in my code instead of the first one, it worked...

I still can't make this work really. Here's where I'm at. If I run the php with IIS, and run phpinfo, there's no PATH_TRANSLATED in the server variables, but there is a ORIG_PATH_TRANSLATED. If I put that in my php file, it works the way it's supposed to. But I don't want to run the php with IIS, I want to run it with Apache. When I run phpinfo on Apache server, there is NO PATH_TRANSLATED or ORIG_PATH_TRANSLATED or anything with the same value in the server variables.

What do I do?

My recommendation: Stop focusing on the PATH_TRANSLATED variable, and instead focus on what it is you are trying to accomplish. If PATH_TRANSLATED is not available to you, then perhaps you should look at another solution.

What version of PHP are you using? You might want to check out this page to get some more information. Note that the information about PATH_TRANSLATED on this page pertains to versions over 4.3.2, not just PHP5.

It's easy to get bogged down in the details of why a certain function or variable doesn't work. Remember that it's usually more important to focus on what you are trying to do, and find something that works for you.

Incidentally, have you tried using SCRIPT_FILENAME?

And you may be getting the headers already sent message now because output buffering was on by default on the old server, but not on yours.
