Hey there,
Is there any way to pass a java script value to a php variable?

For example a javascript browser detection or screen size detection in javascript passes a java script value to php to load a specific include or style sheet.

If your only trying to get a specific stylesheet Javascript can actually to that.

The only other thing is making a hidden form and using javascript to insert the value and submitting the form.

You could also use

window.location = "myurl.com/?myvar="+myvar

Not tested of course.

Ok, that sounds ok on the css front. Just pass a css in according to the browser type.

What about if I find out the screen size and I want to utilise the extra space by pulling in a php include. So if my site is alligned to the left and it is a 1280 screen I can utilise the space on the right.

Is there an ideal way of doing that?

Just build your site so that it doesn't have to.

In general, people do not browse the web with browsers fully opened. SO if you start to fiddle with screen size etc. your users will get annoyed, since they are expected to work fullkscreen.

Just build your site dynamic/free-flowing, as in using margins and padding of elements, an leave the rest to the users'browser to decide.

This is also why CSS can interpret %'s as values too :p

#myMainTable table { width: 80% }

#myMainNavMenu table { width: 20% }

etc. you get the idea.

Thanks guys, I agree with everything. This client is a tough one though and will not allow a re-design. Otherwise I would use everything you have suggested.

Trying to find solutions for what the client requires without a redesign is tough.

with a bit of tinkering:

Use javascript to define the CSS class (Make sure you ahve a basic CSS defined in case javascript fails) and use the stylesheets for positioning.

Unfortunately.. All this is very browser dependent. You are better of convincing your client that what he wants is very unwise, froma web-perspective. He must have faith in your capacity, or else he would not have hired you.

(that is also your task as a developer: Explain to the client what the downside of their wishes is..)
