Session expiry time

I'm trying to build a thing that lets people log in and uses session variables to permit or deny access. The trouble is, if a user leaves his desc for five minutes or so then comes back, the session variables have expired and they have to log in again.

Does anyone know how to cure this?

PS- I have checked the manual out for this but to be honest, I find it totally confusing. I'd be really grateful if I could get an explanation from a human being.

You can alter the lifetime of the session cookies.

You can send a custom cookie with an extra long lifetime that will auto login them. (Like the "Remember Me" checkbox on login forms you see around)

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it.

In truth though, I'm not sure if I want to do that. I prefer the idea of the thing behaving like normal session variables. For instance, I like the idea of a person being able to close the screen and have all the variables wiped. With remember me facilities in place it means people gain access without logging in.

All I'm trying to do is extend the length of time that session variables will last when there is no activity at the user end.

Will that not work for you?

Set the session cookie lifetime to a day for example. But check the php.ini master setting, I believe it sets an upper limit on it.
