PHP And XML

Are there simple ways to write to XML files in PHP? I know you can parse and all, but are there libraries, which are installed STANDARD that can let you add information to an XML file?

PS: A database is nót an option... 😉

Check out DOM XML for php4 and SimpleXML for php5.

Thanks for rapid reply already but as I read php.net:

In PHP 4 this PECL extensions source can be found in the ext/ directory within the PHP source or at the PECL link above. This extension is only available if PHP was configured with --with-dom[=DIR]. Add --with-dom-xslt[=DIR] to include DOM XSLT support. DIR is the libxslt install directory. Add --with-dom-exslt[=DIR] to include DOM EXSLT support, where DIR is the libexslt install directory.

and I see my server config (which I can't change):

'./configure' '--with-apache=../apache_1.3.22' '--without-mysql'

so I can't use the DOM XML functions... (php4 only...)

Then I think you are out-of-luck for standard libraries. You can use php's file manipulation functions to write data to an xml file as you would any other file, but you lose a lot of the advanced functionality (e.g. insert a child node beneath a specific parent node) that you get with DOMXML and SimpleXML.

PEAR is included in PHP distribution.

Yup, PEAR does 😃

Writing XML is trivial - it's as easy as writing HTML or anything else. SabbeRubbish, I think you mean you want to edit XML - and that's just a matter of parsing, manipulating the parsed document, and then writing it back out again.

Indeed, what I need is a toolkit to edit XML files. The PEAR XML_* classes look very promissing. Though my PHP version does not... (4.0.6)

I believe this is the place to call it a failure 😉 as I have no way to update the php version.. It has only recently been update from 3.6 or so, so it's already a blast that php 4 is on it...

Anyway thank you guys for the reactions, I have lost this battle, but the war is not over yet 😃

too bad you cant update PHP version. Why cant you???
Because Anybody with PHP before PHP 4.3.x really would need a change.
PHP is very much different now.
I have still 4.3.10, but latest is PHP 4.3.11. ( I prefer PHP4 for now, not ready for php5 )

It's the webserver at our University, so I am not at all entitled to go make those changes...

I contacted them earlier, but they didn't even respond 🙁

Not good.
I know modern webserver hostings often update to Last PHP Version
on very same day they are released.
And Anything Older than PHP 4.3.1 really is a shame .....

Keep on trying to make your WebMaster understand this! 😉
