string issue, fopen

// This does not. Generates a warning:
$files_path="/home/dir1/dir2/";
$handle=fopen("{$files_path}hello.txt",'r');

// Neither does this. No warning:
$files_path="/home/dir1/dir2/";
$var="{$files_path}hello.txt";
$handle=fopen($var,'r');


// I don't get it :-(

you can use $filepath . "hello.txt" instead
do you need { }? I never use that.

Hrmm, it seems I forgot that functions don't see global vars.

Halojoy: Dots are fine, but sometimes...
$var=$foo." ".$foo2." ".$three." ";

...it sure is tidier without.
$var="$foo $foo2 $three ";

{ } are only needed when the var is next to a char that may be in a var:

$var="$foobar"; is not cool
$var="{$foo}bar"; saves the day

Of course, so does a dot, even nicer (in this case ;-):

$var=$foo."bar";
