resize image before upload??

Hi all!

Just wondering if it's possible to resize a JPEG and then store it on the server, rather than resizing the image on the PHP page from the large JPEG on the server??

Taking a photo from my digital camera means its going to be 1mb-2mb JPEG average size. For a 100kb average photo size on the website seems very inefficient for large numbers of photos in a gallery.

Trying to save some server space!

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

you cant do anything to any files on the client so, no. you need to upload it to the server and then manipulate it however you want.

But after you've uploaded it to the server you can then resize it and save out a smaller version. Take a look at the 2nd and 3rd parameters to [man]imagejpeg[/man] for instance

Is it possible to delete the original after saving a smaller version?

Of course it's possible, but you won't need to if you generate the resized image using the temporay upload file ($_FILES['uploaded_file']['tmp_name']). Then the file will be automatically deleted for you.

Have you thought about resizing using a photo editor, before uploading??

As the previous suggestions have said, resizing on the client-side can only be done (and probably SHOULD be done) by the client.

If you'd rather upload a huge picture (and wait for those MB's to xfer!) and upload it on the server, you would most likely create an image using [man]imagecreatetruecolor/man, open the existing image (we'll assume its a JPEG) using [man]imagecreatefromjpeg/man, and copy the JPEG image to the newly server-side created one (in the first function) using [man]imagecopyresampled/man.

I think there's a 'thumbnailer' snippet in the notes for imagejpeg, and thousands out there if you do a google for php image resizing

I could use Photoshop yes, but trying to develop a CMS type system where people without knowledge of a photo editor could upload photos from their digital cameras and the site would process them and store them at the correct size.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to have a go at coding it, so I'll let you know how I get on!

As others have said, PHP is server side so can do absolutely nothing with your image files until they have been uploaded to the server.

However, there are some Java applets out there that you could use in your upload page to do the resize for you on the client side, before handling the upload. Not a PHP solution of course, but it can really help to keep them bandwidth figures down!

Only other alternatives as far as I can see are simply to give the user instructions on how to resize the image themselves or to point them in the direction of a freeware utility to do it for them.
