help for my job

Hello everybody, I have a question regarding how I should do this.

If I wanted to add to the artist roster page a drop-down box with genres/categories in it, and if somebody picked a certain category--like Rock--then only those certain bands would appear on the list, how would I do that? I know I could make 50 different pages, but I also know that this could be streamlined with PHP, I am just lost when it comes to it.

Could anybody help me out with this?

I have no knowledge of PHP/MySql, I do have HTML knowledge though. Sorry about the job thing, this isn't for my actual work, but it's for someone that I'm helping out.
