Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

I've recently installed SUSE Linux Professional 9.3 but I get this error while trying to access mysql or run phpMyAdmin.

I've checked and found that mysql is running and if I try to restart or stop it, it still gives me that error. Moreover, I've checked /var/lib/mysql directory and mysql.sock does not exist, the folder is empty. I've search for documents to solve this problem but I couldn't find any. It would be really helpful, if anyone from you can help.

This is a common problem. It simply means that your PHP configuration is looking for mysql.sock in a location different from the one where MySQL created it.

Figure out where it is, and change your PHP configuration appropriately.

Hint: Make sure your slocate db is up to date, then 'locate mysql.sock'
