What is this?

I have often seen sections of code in PHP scripts that look like the following. Though I am not sure if I did this right?

if ($dog > $cat) ? $dog = "are awsome" : $dogs = "are still awsome";

Anyways, I was wondering what these are called and how to use them, or just what they are called and I can find a tutorial explaining how to do them. Thank you in advanced.

why don't you take it a step further

$dog=$dog>$cat?'are awsome':'are still awsome';

In the first example one is setting $dog, the other $dogs. Notice the if statement? Think that does much?
