Insert Values!!!

hello

i ve 3 tables: topic, staff and the top_staff

topic has fields....top_id (primary key)

staff -> staff_id (primary key)

top_staff just has two fields: top_id and staff_id as foreign keys

the top_id is AUTO_INCREMENT and the problem is that when i was to do

insert into top_Staff Values( ) i dont know what to put to the field of top_id

when i do insert values to the topic table i put NULL to the top_id field

anybody can help?

You just leave it out of your insert statement

INSERT INTO table (staff_id) VALUES (whatever);

And the auto increment column will do its thing. You can then grab it if you need it with mysql_insert_id(). If you do want to put a value in for it because of some special situation you can, but remember it has to be a number that's not in the column already.

well i ve tried that but it wont work because there is failure of foreign key...i cant just insert a value there because it needs an insert to the top_id field as well
