ten digit phone # into something more friendly

I need to transform something like 9495551212 into a more human-friendly (949) 555 - 1212.

I tried the php manual for left or right or mid (all drawing from my VB background) and even insert, but I couldn't find anything.

What function (or functions) would I use to get those characters added in the middle?

[man]substr[/man]

Example:

$phNo = "(".substr($number, 0,3).") ". substr($number, 3,3)." - " . substr($number, 6);
echo $phNo;

split the string up with [man]substr[/man] then just shove them all back together and the extra bits with dots, which concatenate strings.

I constantly parp it out and people are probably sick of hearing it, but download the .chm of the manual and look for the function reference. Tis a bloody marvel.
