IP geography lookup

Does anyone know how certain sites are able to detect where (physical geographic region) the visitor is coming from based on their IP address?

I'd like to do the same for my site (www.karmaone.org), just wonder if the sites are paying for access to some db or if there is another way to do it.

I've found this: http://ip-to-country.webhosting.info/ . I believe it's free, but you must display some text on your page. For more details, read their documentation.

thanks for the llink but i'm looking for more specific information than ip-country. I'm actually looking to get the nearest city or tri-city region. I think this is what craigslist uses. Also, i think its what big sites like yahoo use to redirect to a local data center.
