Incomplete page loading

I can't seem to find any references to this problem (maybe I'm using the wrong search terms).

Anyway...

I've got a bunch of .php pages on an Apache server. Some are kind of complex and others pretty simple. On a fairly regular basis (about 5% of the time) they do not completely load when called by a site visitor (ie. if the page conatains a form, the data entry boxes appear, but no submit button and nothing below the form) sometimes there will be a fragment of raw code showing.

Since they do load correctly most of the time, I'm thinking that my .php code is okay and that there is something a little flaky going on with the server. My role is such that I don't have a lot of pull with the server administrators and I hate to send them on a fishing expedition regarding my little problems, but are there any "usual suspects" that might explain such intermittent/annoying behavior?

Is there anything I can do with my code to help it cope with intermittent service problems (ie. some sort of pause or buffer or something that will not allow a page to load unless/until it is complete?

I know, pretty abstract...but I'm quite sure there are more things in the world than are dreamt of in my knowledge of website architechture and coding.

It sounds like something the forums had a while back maybe contacting someone here or read the feedback forums on it to see how they solved it. It sounds more like a Server Issue under a lot of load. Of course the situation here was a little different it wasnt so much the page wouldnt load everything it seemed to save things from the previous page and display them up top along with headers at times.

Do you have a testing server, so you firstly see that its not your code, it could help save yourself a lot of time fishing for a problem that maybe elsewhere.

Are you able to run Apache Server locally (on your own computer)? If so, and the pages are all loading correctly, all of the time, then it's probably a server issue (your on-line server).

If not, then you should spend some time downloding a copy of Apache Server and set up your machine as your own "local" server. Then you can run all your PHP scripts locally, and save tons and tons of dev time too.

This is not that complicated and only takes less than an hour to do the necessary tweeks to your Apache files and your PHP .ini file. Throw in a copy of MySQL and you have a complete devolopment machine, running off-line. And no more wearing out your FTP client with :

write code
upload to server via FTP
wait until upload is complete
run code, oop! errors
fix code
upload to server via FTP
wait until upload is complete
run code, oop! errors
repeat until fixed. :queasy:

Thanks for these replies.

I had not thought about trying to set up a server locally...it seems like it might be worth a try, but I suspect I'm gonna have to do quite a bit of new learning to make it work. That's not a bad thing...just a time thing. I was searching some other threads and apparently there is a free download out there called "WAMP" or something like that that will set up all that good stuff by just downloading it and running it.

So I can run Apache server on the machine I am actually working on at the same time? It can be a Windows machine? (One thing at a time, dudes.... ;-)

Some packages out there will install PHP and Apache Server for you, without too much effort, to your local machine. Bring in a free download of MySQL and you have your own dev server, running locally. And these packages work fine with either Win Me or XP (I've done both).

I can also recommend a package called HTML-Kit to develop your PHP code with. It's another freebie that is easy to set up and sure beats the heck out of viewing your source code with Notepad.

The only thing you have to be careful with is that you don't "outrun" your Internet server by using a more advanced version of PHP than it is using. For example, if your Internet server is running PHP 4.3 and you have downloaded 5.0 then you will have to be careful not to use any functions from 5.0 that are not supported in 4.3. IOW, you script may run just fine locally, but will crash on-line.

I have the same question and problem with pages that dont load totally

Server : Xp + wamp 5 1.6.3*

but :

Locally they are all ok, on the server it self, on a pc and on a Mac on my lill home intranet (called with an adresse like : 192.168 ..)

From the outside, going through the public dynamic IP, it only works on the Server it self, the other Pc as the Mac only load a partial page.

PS : the purpose of this server is a workcopy of an existing project that is on and well working for months. So i do assume its not the code it self.
