Unzipping .tar.gz

I just downloaded the latest release of the smarty template engine.

It comes in a .tar.gz format, I was wondering if there is any way to use PHP to unzip the archive?

I know I can do it by downloading a program that supports .tar.gz files, but I'm just curiouse to see if its do-able in php.

I know PHP has some gz functions, but I don't know how to use them and have no clue about the .tar part of the file

You could do it with a system call.

tar xzf foo.tar.gz

Or if you want output so you can determine what files got extracted

tar xzvf foo.tar.gz

NOTE: id10t was talking about using a system call, such as with the function [man]exec/man or [man]system/man or even [man]shell_exec[/man] to run the 'tar' program on a Unix server.
