mysql database

I know this should really be about php but these forums are very informative and I don't know where else to go so I apologize in advance. I've been using mysql on a remote server that someone else is hosting for me. I am trying to setup a mysql database on my home computer. I downloaded the necessary programs and called up a command prompt to connect to the database ( Iam using windows XP). Whenever I try to connect I can't because this is a new database and I have no access codes or anything. This is what I am using...

c:\mysql\bin\mysql -p

How would I make that initial contact?

During setup did you specify a root password? If not just skip the -p, or press return without typing one in, then see if you get the mysql prompt. Type SHOW DATABASES; (don't forget the semicolon) then see if you get anything.

I tried that and it works. I put in the command to show database and I got the TEST database. When AI put in the command to create another database I get a message saying I don't have access to the localhost 🙁
