is it possible to take a table already full of data, and reorganise its fields, and still get it to maintain its current data content?

add the newly named fileds to the end of the table and copy the rows by doing:

UPDATE table SET newfield = oldfield

then DROP the old fields

just gotta think about the 30 odd reports that use the fields currently.

i suppose i could just create the fields with an underscore in front of the names, but named the same, move the data that way and then remove the underscores...

that was me thinking out loud just then, sorry.
