Help formatting a list...

I've volunteered to help revamp a website...I use Dreamweaver, but can code HTML by hand...but the site uses PHP/mySQL to store content...and I don't know enough to complete my first assignment...which is to separate the entries of bird names on this page by A, B, C...etc...as if it were a dictionary of sorts.

I have access to the database from which the names are being pulled...but how would I enforce this formatting/order?

Even a nudge in the general right direction would be much appreciated...
