Problem with includes

I've searched and searched, and don't know how to fix this problem.

I'm working with a script written by someone else, in which all of their includes are written as:

include("./file.php");

I'm currently trying to include these files into other files, and am getting "failed to open required file" errors. I do NOT want to go through and modify all these files to remove the "./" part of the includes (which I understand means the current root directory, yes?).

I've tried setting the include path using set_include_path, but it's still saying it can't find the files. If I'm setting the full directory path with set_include_path, how does the "./" part of the include affect the ability to include? Any help or suggestions?

'./' looks in the same directory as the script. Including './test.php' is the same as including 'test.php'.

I think the problem may be this:

I'm calling the scripts in question from a higher directory, like so: home.php?getfile=index.php

home.php is in a directory two levels up from index.php (and home.php knows that it is pulling files from sub-directories, so that's not the problem). index.php is in the same folder as the files being included. I had thought that setting the include_path would fix things, but it's not. Despite setting the include path, is it still looking in the same directory as home.php??

This is very frustrating.

I do not see why it does not work.
include ( "./file.php" );
should work!,
if 'file.php' is in same directory, as php page that is doing this include

if you get error
as far as I can see, is only because 'file.php' is not found in directory

php.ini

there is
include_path = ".;/usr/local/apache/pear"
this is two paths:
"."
"/usr/local/apache/pear"
separated by a semi-colon ";"

minimum include_path should be
include_path = "."
one point
which is the same directory as file doing include ( at least this is what I think it means )
compare
"./" point slash

phpinfo.php will solve a lot of mysterys for us

Actually, on Unix systems, I believe paths are separate by colons. Depends on your O/S (the path you gave resembled a Unix path).

I'm guessing the problem is what I mentioned before in the post just before yours. I'm just not sure how to get around it...and I don't understand why setting the include path doesn't fix it.

If you added the actual directory into the include path, you could use include 'file.php' but not include './file.php' !

The '.' explicity tells PHP to start in the current directory.

Well, the problem is, there are included files througout this script, all of them using ./ -- I don't want to have to change all of them, and had hoped that there would be some way to indicate where it should be included from by setting the path in the global file that is included in all of them.

Guess you'll have to open your favorite text editor (Notepad works wonderfully.. though Notepad2 has made it obsolete) and do a Search-and-Replace!

I have forgot how windows syntax is
but in distributions php.ini
is one example for each system
If it works better with :, then use this instead

And as we are in Newbies, we have to cover whatever little exception ther is
in sidenotes, too

now topic is why he can not get inculde to work.
this is the issue I was mainly addressing.
as This was the problem here, as I got it from question.
( but then again, communicating in a foreign language all day
is not easy, without some minor misunderstandings )
