[Resolved] Formatting User Input

I did a search on this but nothing seemed to fit what I need. Basically, I have a text area to write in, like the box I'm using right now to ask the question. What I want is that in the case of a user typing,

"Hello, my name is John Doe.

I like ice cream and cookies.",

the database registers it as:

"Hello, my name is John Doe. I like ice cream and cookies."

(EDIT: Or better yet, Hello, my name is John Doe....)

I haven't figured out how to do that though. I tried

nl2br($_POST['story'])

but I got this error:

Column count doesn't match value count at row 1

How can I do this? It seems like it should be a simple substitution, so I just don't get it.

nl2br($_POST['story']) should do it. the error you are getting has nothing to do with that piece of code. maybe you should post your code.

look up [man]nl2br[/man] in the manual, im sure ive seen (in the examples) some code that would produce your text.

i would recommend not storing the html in the database though. i usually do all my formatting on the display end. you just never know when your going to need to use that data outside of a html context, so its easier to store the original raw data.

ah, you were right. I have no idea why the input isn't working, but I used the function to display the data and it worked fine, so that's that. I'll look in the manual for that example. Thanks a lot!
