a server is just software running on a computer. you can download the apache webserver, mysql and php and install them on your machine.

Hi,
Thank you for clearifying that thorpe, as you can see I am brand new to this sort of thing.
I am wondering more about getting a server that can run a forum like phpbb. Knowing what to look for as far as bandwith - (archiving posts) is the biggest issue. If either Dell or another cpu manufacturer.

Are you talking about owning your own server and hosting from it? Or simply buying an account with another provider?

Yeah - I was reffering to owning. I am hopeful that a lot of traffic will result from the forum's launch, but just needed some advice on the details.

For instance - When looking for the right server: which has priority - Processor or RAM.
(http://shop.hardwarecentral.com - I assumed that price would an effect of the importance of either of the two previous options)
