using mail() with pretty messages!

I'd like to send out emails which are formatted to maintain a corporate image - in other words with background colours and bold text as well as specific fonts.

Is it a case of using HTML to format the EMAIL and if so what happens when a recipient doesn't allow HTML viewing?

Yes http://au3.php.net/manual/en/function.mail.php has an example of how to use HTML. If the recipient doesnt allow HTML to be formatted its viewed as plain text basically the user will be able to see the HTML tags and the Email will not look pretty.

That's what I thought would happen.
So is there any recommended ways of getting emails to look neater? The only solution I can think of is to ask the intended recipients what type of email they want - HTML, RTF or Plain Text

A MIME type of multipart/alternative is what you're after. One part in text/html, the other in text/plain.
