but how can access a value returned by a javascript function in php?
that is,

easy peasy. once you got the val using JS. then all you gotta do is refresh the page like this....

JS code: summit like

document.write("<meta refresh 0 url:blah.php?x=".x."&y=.y.">";

url.com/blah.php?x=???&y=???

then u can use php to pick up those values.

You would need to do a redirection and use javascript to send the screensize via URL or POST variables.

Thinsg to keep in mind are, do you need to know the exact screen resolution or the browser screen size (taking into account browser tabs etc..)?
