Php - Cli

Ancient old crusty decided to try PHP a week or so ago. Signed up with a provider who offer PHP. Bought book. Mastering PHP.. first few pages give example of passing a string via the command line. Thus:-

http://www.mesh4us.org.uk/you_are.php?person=ALEC

and in th 'called programme :-

<?php
print('Well, hello ' . $person . ', nice to meet you!');

?>
It doesn't work.

The service provider help line say "CLI doesn't work with PHP"

After a couple of weeks, I don't know enough to ask the right questions. Don't know if CLI is the problem or their implimentation of PHP..

What your doing isnt CLI (Command Line Interface), what your doing with your script is passing a value through a querystring person=value.

Just in case somebody has the wrong end of the stick, the problem could just be old Mr. Register Globals, and you want to change your piece of script to:

 print 'Well, hello ' . $_GET['person'] . ', nice to meet you!';

All variables from the url string live in the $_GET array, and later you'll find all about $POST, $COOKIE and $_SESSION, but by that time you'll probably be 1/2 way to being pretty good.
