assigning places by scores (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc...)

Im trying to figure out how to designate places to teams and how it should be coded. For example, I have 5 teams. After a tournament each teams results are input one at a time. How should I code the places (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc...)?

Do I need to add a field to the results table for places? And if so, do all of the results get input and then click a button to designate each teams place or have it check the result getting added to the database against whats already there and then designate the appropriate place?

Im trying to figure out a good route to take on this. Any input would be great.

It sounds like you are using a database for this so its best to just input their scores, and not any places, and you can use a query to determine their placement using an order by clause.

IE
SELECT teamname FROM scores ORDER by teamscore DESC;

A query like that will pick all the team names and order them by team score with the largest first. That way its put into best to worst order, then when you display them on the page you keep a counter variable starting from 1 and each time you output a row you increment the value and then in effect it can produce a table like
1. myteam
2. theirteam
3. anotherteam

Thats how I currently have it. The only problem with that is what if there is a tie or what if I wanted to show best finish? The best finish is actually in a cumulative stats table that will look at all the tournaments a team played in and then show the highest place they finished. I do have everything written except for this best finish thing. Im writing the cumulative stats table and came across this and it stumped me. I can go back and change how each tournament is input if thats needed to get to my fix.
