MySQL database problems?

I used an online tutorial to install mysql and when I go to the command prompt and navigate to c:/mysql/bin/mysql, I get an error:
Cannot connect to MySQL server on localhost
Why can I not connect?

What kind of install did you do? Did you install it as a service or an executable? Either way you might have to kick it off.

If it's a service go to Start > Run and type in services.msc then scroll down until you find MySQL41 (or whatever yours is) then right click on it and press start.

Not sure how to kick it off as an exe, but it might be in your Start menu. Find the bundled monitor with the traffic lights if that's still with it.

Of course it could be nothing to do with this... but it's a start.
