Match title in html page

I am trying to get a the title out of a html page, I have the html code loaded into a variable. The only thing is sometimes the title is not on the same line.

Any thoughts?

$title = preg_match(/<title>\s</title>/i, $html);

Can anyone help me with this match syntax?

Try this:

$pattern = '@<title>(.*)?</title>@si';
preg_match($pattern, $html);

Sorry to be a pedantic wemstein, but did you mean to use the ? to make the star ungreedy so that
a) it would make the code quicker
b) You wouldn't get back a right mess if somebody had stupidly put in two titles

If so either change the pattern to

$pattern = '@<title>(.*?)</title>@si';
OR
$pattern = '@<title>(.*)</title>@siU';

Of course you aren't! I don't pretend to know all the answers - not even a decent fraction!

I've simply done it that way for as long as I've been using REGEXP syntax... I suppose you could do a [man]preg_match_all/man and grab all the titles, too, but I assumed no one would use multiple titles, and, if so, the first title would be the one that's needed (ignoring the rest).

If the pattern 'b?[/b]' is lacking optimization issues, I'd love to hear from people about it! I myself am at a college in Missuori at the moment, so I can't really do speed tests too easily.
