I use a free coverter for converting MSAccess to MYSQL.

I haven't tried to convert Excel yet but perhaps you could save an Excel file as an Access file then covert it with bullzip?
That might be a nice lazy way to handle empty cells and column names?

Handling the cells is in fact easy. You may use varchar for all cases. As for the column name, you have to adjust carefully, but not a difficult task as well. Any mistake would not make things technically wrong.

Well, I have not tried converting Excel to Access before. But, the tutorial is indeed easy for those who have no knowledge in Access.

Using phpmyadmin also does not incur any cost. As there are many commercial software on excel to mysql, I believe there is high demand on this. And, I hope this tutorial helps a lot for those who are looking for a FREE method.
