Carrying GET variable across

ok,

im creating a search, and when you search, you will go to the page

artists.php?search=dave&name=name&skill1=any&psoftware=any&method=and

that will take you to a page that displays any users with the name dace. it returns say, 5 results. Now, to order the results, the user clicks on the colum headings. So to do this, it must make it so that it passes order=name for example. For the ordering to work, it must then take you to:

artists.php?search=dave&name=name&skill1=any&psoftware=any&method=and&order=name

so how would i go about doing this. i tried:

echo('<a href="' . $PHP_SELF . '&order=name" class="style1">name</A>');

But, alas, this did not work as it just took you to artists.php&order=name

any suggestions?

You can create hidden fields that have all of the variables in them, and then have your form use the GET method.

<form method="get">
<input type="hidden" name="search" value="dave">
<input type="hidden" name="name" value="name">
etc.
</form>

Or if you don't want to use a Submit button, have a php line like
<?php echo "<a href=\"$PHP_SELF?name=$name&search=$search.......etc......\">Sort</a>";

Or, you could use a Javascript to sort the tables using the DOM.

using js can become complex.
Remember to strip the input so you dont put any forbidden tags in the database by accident... The way I did it a year ago..

$search = stripslashes($search);
$search = mysql_real_escape_string($search);
$search = htmlentities($search, ENT_QUOTES);
$search = str_replace(" ", "%", $search);
$search = "%". $search ."%";

here's a somewhat basic skelet, use it if you'd like 🙂

Let me make sure I know what you want first: you have a page using URL variables with the search query in the URL, and a few other URL variables as well, like search.php?search=dave&var1=hello&var2=test? And you want the user to click on the colum name and re-sort everything everything by going to the same page, but with "order=name" appended to the end?

Allright, if that's true, then this might work. Set up a loop to go through each GET variable, append them to the $PHP_SELF, and then append the order you want. Like this:

$page = $PHP_SELF;

foreach ($_GET as $variable => $value)
{
     if ($page == $PHP_SELF) // To see if there are no current variables appended; if there were not and we added "&$variable=$value", it would wind up like page.php&var=test
          $page .= "?$variable=$value";
     else
          $page .= "&$variable=$value";

echo "<table>";
// Processing code; possibly inside a loop with $row['name'] being the name of the column

Basically, after that foreach() loop, you can use "$page&order=name_of_column_to_order_by" wherever you need to put the link for re-ordering.
