[RESOLVED] with Gmail space and php plugins to build a forum?

this is what i saw last week on googlecommunity.com the forum"Gmail"

a member there named "carbonbase" had a post about how to make full use of gmail space,...i dont remeber clearly, but he said using maybe some gmail plugin in php( like a php drive something) and with a dns(i suppose this means domain name something) we can use gmail as webspace for php forum....

its really a great gift! 2Gb of webspace , it should spend me lots of money if i apply these space via a webhosting.

so...does anyboy know about this details? i think if gmail space supports php, it would support others as well maybe asp too?

in that case, we shall never worry about cost on enlarging spaces and traffics any more...

can anyone kindly help?

Who said it uses PHP? Ive never seen anywhere that google use PHP or even have it installed? I know there is a php script for gmail, as well as in various other languages to access Gmail as like a drive. Now I know Gmail uses Python but why build a forum in it, firstly im sure the folks at google will realise and cancel the account and secondly why? You cant use a Database you would be required to use flat files. To me this sounds like way too much work and chances that it wont always work (since gmail changes quite a bit every now and then to keep people on there toes) I truly dont see the point.

but before this psot i had asked in this forum if w/o a db we could build up forums and they said yes u can.

some friends even told me he never uses sql or some other db...

I didnt say you couldnt build a forum without a DB its just not as efficient as using one, as I stated above

Just because some friends dont use DBs doesnt mean its the new hip thing (by the way SQL is the language databases uses technically its not a D😎, its like saying your friend jumped off a cliff, would you?.

But really not using a Database in most cases is inefficient requries a great amount more code to get the same thing done, to me this just sounds redundant and time wasting, especially not using features that DBs give you such as Indexing, easy searching and tons more. Now of course you could develop your own indexing and searching ways within PHP for flat file but just thinking how much time an effort is wasted doing so really makes me think its just not worth it.

Gmail is a mail client. It constantly amazes me how people want to mod and hack every single thing out there. Next thing we know we'll have people running forums on their cell phones! Or better yet - their calculator can serve as their webhost!

Sorry, but there is no possible way you'll get Gmail to connect a MySQL database and do your bidding. It's hard enough to get Gmail to do what I want in the first place. The only thing you can do with Gmail is like what planetsim originally said - d/l that Windows extension which can enumerate Gmail like a "virtual drive", or d/l "libgmailer" to write PHP scripts which can send/receive messages from Gmail.

gmail as a mail client has been good enough,i was just interested in the possibility of that"gmail forum",i dont really need that kind of forum nor the possiblity exsits now according to your analysis 🙂

😃 allright...don't take my analysis too harshly, just use Gmail for what it's meant to do - email - and stop worrying about making it do anything else.
